Nutritious Dog Food For Your Pet

Small Dogs, A Breed Apart.

Small Dog, Big Heart? What about me?

Small Dog, Big Heart? What about me?

Small dogs are still dogs. They may be cute as a “bug’s ear,” and their tiny statue might make them seem like puppies forever, but they aren’t puppies forever. Even if they are very small, they still grow up to be grown dogs.

Most small-breed dogs do need special care that fills their needs. They are dogs, but they aren’t exactly the same as large-breed dogs.

First of all, small-breed dogs tend to live much longer than the larger breeds. You can expect a small-breed dog to live at least 15 years, and many of them live much longer. So the first thing to consider is your commitment level before you buy a small dog.

Remember, the responsibility for this tiny creature is going to last a long, long time.  You should have an unconditional love commitment connected to your decision when you decided to get your dog.

People who own tiny little dogs tend to carry them rather than letting them walk. But even though they are tiny and have short little legs, those legs and the body attached to them need exercise.  So don’t neglect letting them run and exercise a bit.  It may do you so good as well.

Little dogs have small stomachs. They can’t eat enough at one feeding each day to supply them with all of the nutrition that their bodies need. Very small dogs need to be fed two or three times daily, but each feeding needs to be only half or a third of the amount you’d feed him if you fed him only once a day. There are far too many overweight small dogs out there.  You’ve seen them.

Floating kneecaps, hypoglycemia, heart murmur, and collapsing trachea are all health issues that are more common in small dogs than in larger breeds. You need to educate yourself so that you’ll recognize the symptoms if your small-breed dog develops any of these problems, or any other health problems.

Small dogs are terrific pets. They don’t take up much space, but they have big generous hearts!

To your dog’s health,

Thomas

Dog lovers,

Commercial dog food. Is it healthy for dogs?

Commercial dog food. Is it healthy for dogs?

Commercial dog food, is it safe and free from toxic preservatives, or other harmful ingredients?

Do you struggle to find a food that you believe is healthy and your dog will eat it?  Many dogs can get finnicky after trying food after food just to find one you think they like.  And it is always the most expensive one!

One concern you might have is whether the dog food you are feeding now, is the healthiest, and meeting good nutritional guidelines for your dog breed.  Lot’s of controversy over which food is best, canned vs. dry kibble, raw food diet, homemade dog food, or a combination of all mentioned.

All of them can work if you know what ingredients NOT to include.  There is a really good informative book called Dog Food Secrets that can enlighten you on this subject.  It can be startling and even downright scary, but if you love you pet and want the best nutrition for your dog, it’s worth the read.

Dry Vs. Canned food

Canned wet dog food generally has more meat content than dry kibble dog food. Wet food is closer to what your dog would normally eat naturally, than dry kibble. Dogs aren’t meant to eat dry pellets/chunks, their diets are meant to consist of a lot of water, most of which isn’t obtained by drinking from a bowl.

From all the research that I have done, it all boils down to: The more water content, the lower the levels of nutrients; the lower the levels of nutrients, the larger the serving size has to be to obtain the recommended amount of nutrition.

Naturally, canned dog food almost always has higher water content than dry dog food chunks or kibble. So, you would have to serve your dog a larger serving of canned dog food to attain the same amount of nutrition as what would be in a smaller serving of dry chunks or kibble. ( seems odd to me, but research shows…)

However, water content alone may not tell you if one food brand is higher in actual nutritional content than another. You would need to look at the guaranteed analysis and understand what that means.  Labels are tricky.

You would have to convert all the weights into a dry state.  If a can of dog food contains 75% water, then you subtract that from 100% to get the dry figure amount.  This leaves you with 25% dry ingredients.  If the amount of protein is 6%, then you calculate what percent 6% is of 25%.  It comes out to just under 17%.

Compare that to the percentage of dry dog food and you can adjust your dog’s servings of canned food to get the proper amount of recommended nutrients.  I told you it was tricky.

I personally prefer neither, and feed raw and homemade instead. Better nutrition, natural, unprocessed foods, and actual dental benefits.  I make the food myself for my dog, that way I can control all the ingredients.

I came across a great resource for dog food recipes and then some!  A guy named John Miller put out an ebook called “Healthy Food For Dogs: Homemade Recipes”.  This book has all kinds of great healthy recipes for young and old dogs.

There are even recipes for skunk odor removal, recipes to keep fleas away, to cure your dog’s bad breath, dog shampoo, all of which use common household ingredients that you have in your kitchen or bathroom right now.

One of my favorites is the dog treats.  My dog went crazy for them.  So did the neighbor dogs that come over everyday for a biscuit.  You dog will love you for them too!

With my dog Kozmo, it was the change to homemade dog food that made such a huge difference in her energy, the sparkle in her eyes, and the sheen of her coat, not to mention her attitude!

After researching dog foods and finding out about the preservative ethoxyquin that is in many commercial dog foods, we made the switch without hesitation.  If you read about ethoxyquin, you will come to the same conclusion.

Our dog food bills went down, but it did take a little more effort to cook and put together healthy ingredients that Kozmo loved.  We found some pretty good recipes, but it still took some experimenting.

Then we discovered John Millers recipes.  He has a book of 245 great recipes.  It took him over 50 years to put these all together.

The multimedia ebook is called Healthy Food For Dogs: Homemade Recipes  This ebook will thrill just about anyone who want to give their dog the best wholesome food.  Makes it easy.

It is always good to start looking at what kind of food you are feeding your dog if your pet starts having health issues.  Food allergies due to all the wheat and corn in commercial foods could be the culprit.  Maybe something far worse in the food is affecting your pet.  Investigate.

To your healthy pet,

Welcome to Fat Dogs - Buy Healthy Dog Food

First of all, let me tell you a little bit about me.  My wife and I loved and enjoyed our rescued dog Kozmo, a white and brown, 100 mile per hour, Border Collie/Brittany mix.  She was smart as a whip!

Kozmo became even more special just after her 6th birthday.  She suffered a damaged spine that left here rear legs paralyzed.  It was a fluke thing, she was just jumping up onto the bed while we were sleeping, and her spinal sheath fractured and cut into the spinal cord.

An emergency operation was our only shot at helping her.  Putting her to sleep was the last resort.  She had a 50/50 chance of walking again but she ended up with the wrong 50%.  It was a long road back.  Just how do you take care of a paralyzed dog?  No one could tell us.

In a months time, the large incision healed, so we ordered a custom wheelchair for Kozmo from www.dogwheelchairs.com (Kozmo is the first dog you see when the site comes up!)  These people are awesome!  This wheelchair was a life-saver for Kozmo.

With Kozmo’s special needs we had to learn about how to keep her healthier than a normal dog.  She took constant care.  My wife Shelly was the absolute best at taking care of her.  She was a miracle worker.  And Kozmo knew it.

Kozmo Kazi Fouts – Wonderdog of West Michigan and the World Beyond, passed on at 13-1/2 years of age.  She was paralyzed for 7-1/2 years.  All three vets gave her at the most, 2 years to live as a paralyzed dog.  She proved them all wrong and lived a very happy, healthy life.  She taught us a lot about life, determination, and live life to your fullest despite the odds.

Kozmo was internationally known through the media.  She was in newspapers, magazines, and on the Internet.  A photograph of her and I won a photo contest!  She participated in dog workshops and seminars, showing the possible options for paralyzed dogs, always making friends.

We learned about nutrition in dog food and also the “bad” things found in some commercial, “on the shelf” dog foods.  Once we sorted things out, started feeding Kozmo the right nutritious foods and even added some supplements to her diet, she was the sparkiest, happiest, healthy dog around!

If your dog has skin allergies, over-weight, is sluggish, or any number of ailments, a lot of times it is the food you are feeding your pet.  You just didn’t know.

So stay tuned and you will learn about dog nutrition, dog food recipes, and tips to keep your dog in tail-waggin, tip top shape.  Your pet trusts you.  Give your dog vibrant health.
