First of all, let me tell you a little bit about me.  My wife and I loved and enjoyed our rescued dog Kozmo, a white and brown, 100 mile per hour, Border Collie/Brittany mix.  She was smart as a whip! 

Kozmo became even more special just after her 6th birthday.  She suffered a damaged spine that left here rear legs paralyzed.  It was a fluke thing, she was just jumping up onto the bed while we were sleeping, and her spinal sheath fractured and cut into the spinal cord.

An emergency operation was our only shot at helping her.  Putting her to sleep was the last resort.  She had a 50/50 chance of walking again but she ended up with the wrong 50%.  It was a long road back.  Just how do you take care of a paralyzed dog?  No one could tell us.

In a months time, the large incision healed, so we ordered a custom wheelchair for Kozmo from www.dogwheelchairs.com (Kozmo is the first dog you see when the site comes up!)  These people are awesome!  This wheelchair was a life-saver for Kozmo.

With Kozmo’s special needs we had to learn about how to keep her healthier than a normal dog.  She took constant care.  My wife Shelly was the absolute best at taking care of her.  She was a miracle worker.  And Kozmo knew it.

Kozmo Kazi Fouts – Wonderdog of West Michigan and the World Beyond, passed on at 13-1/2 years of age.  She was paralyzed for 7-1/2 years.  All three vets gave her at the most, 2 years to live as a paralyzed dog.  She proved them all wrong and lived a very happy, healthy life.  She taught us a lot about life, determination, and live life to your fullest despite the odds.

Kozmo was internationally known through the media.  She was in newspapers, magazines, and on the Internet.  A photograph of her and I won a photo contest!  She participated in dog workshops and seminars, showing the possible options for paralyzed dogs, always making friends.

We learned about nutrition in dog food and also the “bad” things found in some commercial, “on the shelf” dog foods.  Once we sorted things out, started feeding Kozmo the right nutritious foods and even added some supplements to her diet, she was the sparkiest, happiest, healthy dog around!
