Fat Dogs – Buy Healthy Dog Food

Nutritious Dog Food For Your Pet

Dry Vs. Canned food

Canned wet dog food generally has more meat content than dry kibble dog food. Wet food is closer to what your dog would normally eat naturally, than dry kibble. Dogs aren’t meant to eat dry pellets/chunks, their diets are meant to consist of a lot of water, most of which isn’t obtained by drinking from a bowl.

From all the research that I have done, it all boils down to: The more water content, the lower the levels of nutrients; the lower the levels of nutrients, the larger the serving size has to be to obtain the recommended amount of nutrition.

Naturally, canned dog food almost always has higher water content than dry dog food chunks or kibble. So, you would have to serve your dog a larger serving of canned dog food to attain the same amount of nutrition as what would be in a smaller serving of dry chunks or kibble. ( seems odd to me, but research shows…)

However, water content alone may not tell you if one food brand is higher in actual nutritional content than another. You would need to look at the guaranteed analysis and understand what that means.  Labels are tricky.

You would have to convert all the weights into a dry state.  If a can of dog food contains 75% water, then you subtract that from 100% to get the dry figure amount.  This leaves you with 25% dry ingredients.  If the amount of protein is 6%, then you calculate what percent 6% is of 25%.  It comes out to just under 17%.

Compare that to the percentage of dry dog food and you can adjust your dog’s servings of canned food to get the proper amount of recommended nutrients.  I told you it was tricky.

I personally prefer neither, and feed raw and homemade instead. Better nutrition, natural, unprocessed foods, and actual dental benefits.  I make the food myself for my dog, that way I can control all the ingredients.

I came across a great resource for dog food recipes and then some!  A guy named John Miller put out an ebook called “Healthy Food For Dogs: Homemade Recipes”.  This book has all kinds of great healthy recipes for young and old dogs.

There are even recipes for skunk odor removal, recipes to keep fleas away, to cure your dog’s bad breath, dog shampoo, all of which use common household ingredients that you have in your kitchen or bathroom right now.

One of my favorites is the dog treats.  My dog went crazy for them.  So did the neighbor dogs that come over everyday for a biscuit.  You dog will love you for them too!
